Ben Affleck playing a guy with autism would have been the laugh out loud premise of the year a decade ago, but since his resurgence as a talented director and serious actor he is actually completely believable in The Accountant. I really bought him as the savant capable of impossible calculations and even more impossible physical feats of strength and accuracy. The movie itself is riddled with flaws, but has a head on its shoulders and knows how to have fun with them. I also really enjoyed the relationship between Anna Kendrick and Affleck, she really has proven to be a treasure in movies like these. Is it strange that I cared about the characters but not at all about the plot? I won’t even discuss the story since one of the movie’s big mistakes is that they try and explain everything that happens. And not in the good “hey we set this up so we’re going to make it relevant to the story now”, but in the bad ‘we have to have dialogue explaining each and every single thing in this movie including backstories and characters and events that aren’t necessary’. This results in a scene where J.K. Simmons sits down and basically wastes our time for ten minutes talking about and explaining things that we don’t care about that we didn’t even remember happened at the beginning to a character who is forced to listen quietly and pretend to care.
Honestly I completely understand why this has a 50% on Rotten Tomatoes. While some scenes are expertly handled, others are very amateurishly shot. There’s also some uneven pacing and some scenes just kinda happen while others are explained to death. The ending also gets very silly and there are some big reveals I was kicking myself for not realizing sooner. The movie also has a throwaway, forgettable villain. But screw it, I went to see this movie to have fun, and fun is what I had. It had more of the entertainment I missed from The Magnificent Seven remake of the remake. I think there is enough good here in terms of some nice surprising humor, good action, a great premise, and Affleck’s enjoyable performance to make it work. Jon Bernthal is also a lot of fun to watch in it (and here I thought I wouldn’t be able to see him as anyone but The Punisher). As long as you don’t take this movie TOO seriously, I think you’ll have a good time with it.
